How do you say Happy 70th birthday to yourself? If our co-founder Margaret Isely were here, she'd say it with delicious food, chocolate ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup, a side of root beer floats, and laughter to go around. Finding joy in life's simple pleasures was Margaret's way of being. It's a legacy she passed on to us, and it's why we take time every August—her birth month—to celebrate our company's birthday and honor hers. Here's another thing you should know about Margaret: she was fierce, strong, and passionate, and that's how she lived her values, decade after decade. We're humbled and proud to say that we've followed in her footsteps as a family and a company. It's why our Five Founding Principles—Nutrition Education, Crew, Community, Quality, and Affordability—still guide our business today. Margaret's legacy continues breathing throughout Natural Grocers every day. As we reflect on 70 years, we'd like to celebrate a few of the things this joy-filled woman— with so much love for people, this planet, and the pursuit of health—sparked around here. The impact she had on her family, her friends, and this company wasn't because she set out to "do a thing"… she simply couldn't not. It's who she was, organically. Travel back in time with us to the cozy house that was our first store, called Vitamin Cottage. The air was thick with the herbaceous aroma of bulk herbs and spices being packed in the kitchen. The aisles were narrow, the shelves tall and lined with supplements. And if you followed the sound of laughter, you'd probably find Margaret herself sharing her wealth of nutrition knowledge with the community. You'd also find a community food cabinet Margaret kept in those early stores if you knew where to look. Open the door, and you'll discover ingredients for nutritious meals, ready and waiting for families in need. Best of all, if you were part of the Crew, she'd take you out for lunch on your birthday to thank you for being born and sharing your skills with us. "Ours is to share" was one of Margaret's favorite mottos. So, on our 70th anniversary, we'd like to share our gratitude with you. And we hope you'll join us to celebrate— Margaret style.
