Olives and extra-virgin olive oil might be on your radar because of their monounsaturated fat content and prevalence in the Mediterranean Diet, which is an essential part of their nutritional charm. i Here’s another reason you should lock this relationship down—olives are brimming with phenolic compounds containing potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. ii One of the most abundant is hydroxytyrosol, a powerful protector against LDL cholesterol oxidation. iii Why does it matter? Because LDL oxidation is considered a critical step in the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), which can begin in childhood and progress rapidly after age 40. iv v Hydroxytyrosol confers other cardioprotective benefits as well, including protection against arterial stiffening and reducing chronic inflammation. vi So how about a date with a homemade Greek salad? Because when it comes to heart-healthy relationships with food, olives are the total package! FOR THE LOVE OF ORGANICS IT’S A BETTER PROVIDER. An often-underestimated trait of organic agriculture is its economic viability! A survey of organic and conventional olive farmers in Greece demonstrates fascinating contradictions in this regard. Both groups agreed that organic methods were significantly better for the environment, human health, and the finished product quality. Yet, conventional farmers believed organic to be less profitable. Data from the same study shows that in reality, the opposite is true: Production costs and yields were similar between the two, while profitability was considerably higher in organic. It also found that 86 percent of the organic farmers' income came from olive farming, while only 66 percent of the conventional farmers' did. vii The profitability of organic farming is a critical factor for increasing its adoption and, consequently, its environmental benefits around the world. The Mediterranean basin, where the bulk of the world's olives come from, is considered a hotspot for climate change. So, as you pursue this nutritionally rich love affair with olives, consider the environmental impact of how they are grown. viii ix An article published in the journal Agronomy for Sustainable Development reviewing studies on conventional and organic olive orchards in Spain provides compelling insight: x CARBON FOOTPRINT: A comparison of the greenhouse gas emissions of 42 pairs of conventional and organic olive orchards shows a considerable difference in CO2 emissions between the two—24 grams per kg in conventional versus 10 grams per kg for organic. The high emissions in conventional were primarily linked to fertilizer. By contrast, greater carbon sequestration in organic was attributed to practices including cover cropping, recycling pruning debris, reduced tillage, and composting. vi BIODIVERSITY: Soil enzyme activity, birds, and spiders were all found in greater abundance in organic operations. Spiders are crucial for pest management in olive orchards, and the hedge vegetation found in the organic orchards was correlated with significantly higher abundance and diversity of these beneficial invertebrates. vi FIND THE OLIVE THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU! Scientists believe that ALA may increase the production of acetylcholine, an essential nervous system messenger that is deficient in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. xxxviii In one study, 600 mg/day given to AD patients for 12 months resulted in a stabilization of cognitive functions. xxxix Animal studies have shown that ALA supplementation reduced brain damage after a stroke and that those animals who received ALA had a survival rate three times greater than those that did not. xl xli Studies have also shown that ALA is able to improve motor-impairment symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease, a major neurodegenerative disorder that leads to a variety of motor disturbances caused by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the brain. xlii xliii 5 LIVERHEALTH+DETOXSUPPORT Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition in which too much fat is stored in liver cells, has become the most common cause of chronic liver disease in the developed world and can be caused by obesity, type-2 diabetes, and eating poorly (especially foods containing high-fructose corn syrup). A 2018 meta- analysis of randomized, placebo-controlled trials found that ALA supplementation in those with a high body mass index (BMI) resulted in reductions in weight and BMI. 2 BLOOD SUGAR SUPPORT A 2018 meta-analysis identified 20 randomized controlled trials that examined the e ect of supplemental ALA on markers of glucose utilization in 1,245

subjects with metabolic disorders (not limited to type-2 diabetes). ALA (in doses of 200 to 1,800 mg/day for two weeks to one year), alone or together with other nutrients, was found to lower fasting blood glucose and insulin, reduce insulin resistance, and lower blood HbA1c concentration, a marker of glycemic control over the past few months. xi xii 3 TYPE-2 DIABETES A 2006 study revealed the dramatic e ects of supplementing with ALA in improving insulin sensitivity in overweight adults with type-2 diabetes. Oral supplementation with 600 mg of ALA, twice daily, produced significant improvements in only four weeks. xiii xiv A separate placebo-controlled study showed that ALA reduced blood glucose levels by 10 to 30 percent, e ectively improving insulin function and reducing advanced glycation end products (AGEs), significant contributors to the aging process. xv xvi xvii AGEs are created in the body when excess blood glucose (sugar) binds to proteins, damaging body tissues and cells and also inducing inflammation and oxidation. Being rooted in health starts with a healthy diet. But what constitutes a healthy diet? There are so many diet trends and “experts” telling us how to eat, but it really comes down to this: Aim to eat as many organic vegetables as possible, add reasonable amounts of healthy fats, like olive oil, coconut oil, and organic or grassfed butter, and protein (humanely raised and sustainably produced and/or grassfed whenever possible), while reducing the amount of grain-based refined carbs and vegetable oils you eat. 9 RESTORE TASTE & SMELL Italian and British researchers investigated the e ects of ALA on taste impairment from an unknown cause in 44 patients ranging from 18–67 years old. The treatment regimen consisted of 200 mg of ALA three times daily (600 mg/day) for 60 days. At the end of the trial period, 46 percent of the ALA group reported that they had completely regained their sense of taste, while 27 percent reported “decided improvement.” Ninety-one percent reported at least some improvement with ALA supplementation. liv lv A separate study investigated the e ects of ALA on those ages 22–79 who had loss of smell following a viral respiratory infection. All patients received the same treatment—600 mg/day of ALA for an average of 4.5 months—and all were subjected to standardized olfactory tests before and after the treatment period. Following treatment with ALA, most showed significant improvement in their ability to detect and distinguish odors. Twenty-six percent exhibited moderate improvement over the study period, while 35 percent showed “remarkable improvement.” lvi lvii lviii

What's in your bathroom cabinet? It may be much more than you bargained for! Consider these stats from data compiled by the Environmental Working Group (EWG)—women use an average of 12 personal care products daily, exposing them to 168 di erent chemicals! Men, using an average of six products, encounter approximately 85 chemicals in their hygiene routine. i The problem is that the FDA doesn't require these chemicals to be tested for safety before they go to market. The Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act hasn't been updated since it was created in 1938, and it's been left up to the industry to verify the safety of the ingredients they put in cosmetics over the last 80 years. ii Unfortunately, this continues to mean that those possible carcinogens, neurotoxins, hormone disruptors, and chemicals that impact fertility are included in products from deodorant to shampoo. iii Take a look at some of the ingredients found in everyday hygiene essentials that you’ ll never find in Natural Grocers’ ™ “bathroom cabinet.” INGREDIENTS WE DON'T CARRY

Winter weather leaves skin thirsty for moisture, but make sure you’re not quenching the thirst with these byproducts of the petroleum industry—mineral oil and petrolatum. Here’s the scoop—when these substances aren’t refined correctly, they may be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic carbons (PAHs), a toxic set of chemicals that include possible carcinogens. iv The European Union restricts petrolatum in cosmetics, requiring a full refining history and proof that it isn’t made from carcinogenic substances. v Unfortunately, the U.S. has no such restrictions or disclosure requirements. vi Considering the petroleum industry's negative environmental impact and the fact that these ingredients also interfere with our body’s natural hydrating mechanisms— at Natural Grocers, we choose cleaner, safer ways to moisturize. vii

ORAL HYGIENE SHOULD BE CLEAN WE SAY NO THANKS TO ARTIFICIAL COLORS AND PARABENS! Is there any reason to brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with artificial colors? We can’t think of one, yet synthetic dyes like Yellow 5, Blue 1, Red 28, and Red 40 are found in popular toothpaste and mouthwash brands, including those made for kids. viii ix x xi Yellow 5 and Red 40 have been linked to hyperactivity in children, while Blue 1 and Yellow 5 have shown potential neurobehavioral e ects in animals. xii xiii xiv xv So why risk a completely pointless, yet possibly harmful ingredient? Another chemical to look out for in mouthwash is propylparaben, a preservative with strong evidence of being an endocrine disruptor, and in one study researchers found an association between urinary propylparaben and decreased fertility. xvi xvii The good news is—there’s a reason to get your toothpaste and mouthwash at Natural Grocers, because our oral hygiene collection is always free of artificial colors and parabens. BEACH DAYS NEED NOT CAUSE HARM TO HORMONES AND CORAL REEFS. Oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate are active ingredients commonly used in sunscreen. Yet studies show oxybenzone, part of a class of UV filters called benzophenones, to be a possible endocrine disruptor, with the potential to cause developmental and reproductive toxicity. xviii xix In addition to altering hormone function, it can produce benzophenone-1, a compound that has been linked to endometriosis in women. xx Not only that, it causes severe harm to coral reefs, with one study showing damage at concentrations as low as 62 parts per trillion—a microscopic amount! xxi Octinoxate and homosalate are also potential endocrine disruptors, and all three chemicals (plus several more) were shown to be absorbed into the bloodstream following a single application of sunscreen, according to recent FDA studies. xxii xxiii xxiv These are the reasons why, at Natural Grocers, you’ll only find mineral- based (zinc and titanium dioxide) sunscreens that are safer for you and the coral reefs! GOOD HAIR DAYS DON’T REQUIRE FORMALDEHYDE RELEASING PRESERVATIVES! Shampoo, rinse, repeat, but be sure not to repeat this toxic habit: lathering up your scalp with formulas that contain formaldehyde- releasing preservatives (FRPs)! Formaldehyde itself is considered a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the United States National Toxicology Program. xxvii Exposure to the substance can happen through inhalation and possibly
