Dear neighbors,

Can we get a little personal with you this month? You see, March is Women’s History Month, and our company history can’t be told without remembering an exceptional woman: Margaret Isely, our co-founder, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend. If you’re reading this, you’re probably familiar with Margaret because she’s a common theme around Natural Grocers ® . You may have seen her smiling face greeting you as you walk into your local store, as her picture hangs in every Natural Grocers entrance. It embodies her well—her sparkling smile and eyes filled with warmth spreading out through the creases at the corners, the evidence of a lifetime spent smiling. Margaret’s smiles were always genuine, always inclusive. If you crossed her path, you mattered to her—that was a fact. Margaret was once described to this writer (based on her picture) as a pleasant looking lady who seemed like the cozy, pie-baking type. And while she was, in fact, a culinary genius of nutritious comfort food, this impression isn’t even in the ballpark of her true essence. I want you to know that our commitment to Crew, community, quality, affordability, and nutrition education began with her fierce dedication to these principles! She was a woman who led with a powerful, unwavering belief in and practice of her values, which always included family, her neighbors, and a whole-hearted zest for life. And I have rarely met another soul as fearless as my grandmother. Women still play a significant role in the generations of Natural Grocers’ family leadership that have followed in Margaret’s footsteps. Some share her genes, others do not. Yet all are influenced and empowered by the standards she set for treating everyone with empathy and gratitude. And, while the world has changed in all encompassing ways since we last had the privilege of sharing a laugh with her, we have no doubt that the authenticity and love with which she touched the lives of all she encountered would be as impactful now as they were back then. So, in Margaret’s honor, here’s a heartfelt shoutout of gratitude to all the women making a positive impact in big and small ways—in legacies being lived now, and those now living on! Happy March, everyone!
