Yes, it IS Organic Month we want to chat about again. See, we care a whole awful lot about organic agriculture. We grew up caring about it long before it was a well-known thing. And we know producing food in systems that regenerate rather than deteriorate is critical for the health of our families, economies, and the planet. Still, as the message spreads, it can become diluted, diverging from the reasons that make it vitally important. So, September, we’d love it if you used your charm to help us reunite the reasons organic matters with the message. We’ll start by sharing a simple, tangible reason why advancing this mission is vital for our family: We grew up in these great RockyMountains in our home state of Colorado. And we think there’s nothing like the magic of a mountain meadow, painted with wildflowers, buzzing with bees and butterflies, and the presence of other wildlife like elk watching from the shadows of the pines. Sometimes you can hear a mountain stream bubbling nearby, with water so clear you can see the fish. It’s something we hope everyone experiences sometime in their lives. Yet, the things that happen downstream threaten our majestic wild places and the life that inhabits them. And that’s why we believe that acting on how food is produced is critical. There are many contributors to climate change beyond our control, but our food choices are not. We know that the food systems we support have an impact, one way or another, on soil, water quality, biodiversity, and carbon emissions. So we’re suggesting, September, that if we can each transport ourselves for a moment to the places that flood us with a sense of wonder, serenity, and beauty, perhaps the simple act of remembering can help us reconnect to the reasons that our everyday choices matter. Maybe it can help us to understand, on a gut level, why supporting agricultural systems that regen- erate our soil, support biodiversity, sequester carbon, and provide hope for the future of our planet is vital. Because you see, we want our great, great grandchildren to someday experi- ence the golden glow of a Colorado mountain meadow on a mid-September afternoon. We’ll see you soon, friends.
