Hi Neighbors, It’s Natural Grocers’ 71st (!!) anniversary this month, and seven-plus decades of doing this has us feeling reflective. The world has changed so much since 1955, when our story started. That was the first year more Americans traveled by plane than by train— can you imagine? Now, in this era of driverless cars, artificial intelligence, and the availability of almost anything at the click of a button, the pace of change can be disorienting. So what's worth holding onto? For us, the answers are the same as they’ve always been. Healthy soil. Real food. Founding principles. Community. Family. There are no technological replacements for these, and as the world around us has changed, our commitment to them has not. We believe in the enduring power of regenerative organic agriculture to keep the soil from turning to dust. It's how we nurture birdsong in the morning, an abundance of bees and butterflies, and the vibrant hues of wildflowers in the summer. It's the path to a more resilient food system. The proof is in the soil. We believe in the healing power of real food, prepared with nourishing ingredients and backed by the science of nutrition education. And this is what Margaret Isely, our co-founder, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend, taught us to value above all else. The memory of her bright smile and fearless, generous spirit lives on in everything we do, and no artificial intelligence or instant gratification can replace a legacy like that.
