Dear neighbors,

Can we get a little personal with you this month? You see, March is Women’s History Month, and our company history can’t be told without remembering an exceptional woman: Margaret Isely, our co-founder, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend. If you’re reading this, you’re probably familiar with Margaret because she’s a common theme around Natural Grocers ® . You may have seen her smiling face greeting you as you walk into your local store, as her picture hangs in every Natural Grocers entrance. It embodies her well—her sparkling smile and eyes filled with warmth spreading out through the creases at the corners, the evidence of a lifetime spent smiling. Margaret’s smiles were always genuine, always inclusive. If you crossed her path, you mattered to her—that was a fact. Margaret was once described to this writer (based on her picture) as a pleasant looking lady who seemed like the cozy, pie-baking type. And while she was, in fact, a culinary genius of nutritious comfort food, this impression isn’t even in the ballpark of her true essence. I want you to know that our commitment to Crew, community, quality, affordability, and nutrition education began with her fierce dedication to these principles! She was a woman who led with a powerful, unwavering belief in and practice of her values, which always included family, her neighbors, and a whole-hearted zest for life. And I have rarely met another soul as fearless as my grandmother. Women still play a significant role in the generations of Natural Grocers’ family leadership that have followed in Margaret’s footsteps. Some share her genes, others do not. Yet all are influenced and empowered by the standards she set for treating everyone with empathy and gratitude. And, while the world has changed in all encompassing ways since we last had the privilege of sharing a laugh with her, we have no doubt that the authenticity and love with which she touched the lives of all she encountered would be as impactful now as they were back then. So, in Margaret’s honor, here’s a heartfelt shoutout of gratitude to all the women making a positive impact in big and small ways—in legacies being lived now, and those now living on! Happy March, everyone!

Even if you generally eat a healthy diet loaded with vegetables, it’s hard to get optimal amounts of certain vitamins and minerals through food alone. Decades of chemical intensive conventional agricultural practices have severely depleted our soils, stripping them of beneficial vitamins and minerals, leaving little for vegetables and fruits to takeup as they grow. Multiple studies have found declines in a number of important nutrients in vegetables and fruit, including calcium, magnesium, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and vitamins A and C. And brand new research is beginning to show that climate change will also have a negative impact on the nutrient content of plants, with plants becoming more concentrated in carbohydrates like glucose, fructose, and sucrose and containing fewer minerals, including zinc, iron, and magnesium. While taking a daily multi will give you a solid foundation to build on, you may also consider your individual needs and take more of specific nutrients as needed (for example, vitamin D or the B vitamins).

#2. Keep It Running Smoothly: Magnesium Magnesium is one of those nutrients that plays an integral role in, well, almost everything. It is a cofactor in hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body, including those involved in protein synthesis (building and maintaining muscle mass and other tissues); muscle function (including keeping our hearts beating); the release of neurotransmitters (the chemicals in our brain responsible for mood, learning, memory, and focus); blood sugar control; and blood pressure regulation. It is also required for energy production in the mitochondria that keeps us alive and healthy, normal cell function and repair, and is a key player in maintaining healthy bones. Low magnesium levels have been associated with type-2 diabetes, inflammation, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, depression, migraine headache, asthma, and colon cancer. As you can see, magnesium is no minor player in whole body health. Dietary surveys consistently show that intakes of magnesium are lower than recommended amounts, with 1 out of 3 Americans not getting the recommended daily allowance (RDA). Additionally, because of decreases of this important mineral in our food, and a host of modern day magnesium drains (stress, chronic disease, prescription drugs, ultra processed foods, and alcohol), almost all of us have suboptimal levels; in other words, just enough to prevent an outright deficiency, but not enough to prevent chronic disease. According to research, most people need an additional 300 mg of magnesium daily (in addition to the daily recommended allowance (RDA) of 320-420 mg daily) in order to obtain optimal levels that lower the risk of chronic disease.

In an ideal world, we would all eat an abundance of food rich in the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats EPA and DHA while limiting foods high in pro-inflammatory omega-6s. In reality, though, most of us eat way too many omega-6 fats that promote inflammation and fall woefully short on omega-3s. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), found in fatty fish, fish oil supplements, and certain types of marine algae, reduce inflammation via a number of different mechanisms, including producing anti-inflammatory compounds and inhibiting pro-inflammatory molecules in the body. EPA and DHA play a significant role in protecting the body from diseases that are either caused by or worsened by inflammation, from arthritis and asthma to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. They are also crucial for brain health. The brain is 60 percent fat and DHA makes up the majority of that fat, influencing nerve transmission and cellular communication, and less than optimal levels of DHA can negatively affect normal brain function. The omega-3s are critical in fetal and infant brain development, and in young and old alike, the omega-3s have proven to improve cognition, learning, attention, focus, and memory. They also have a positive effect on mood and mental health, particularly in depression. Most of us simply don’t eat enough cold water, fatty fish—the main food source of EPA and DHA—to obtain optimal levels. In fact, a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health found that a low intake of the omega-3 fats was one of the main dietary risks for death. A supplement is an easy way to get your daily dose of these vital fats. In healthy people, 1,000-2,000 mg of a combination of EPA and DHA daily is recommended. #3. #4. Defend Whole Body Health: Vitamin D Vitamin D, much like magnesium, is a nutrient that plays a role in almost all aspects of health, and as mentioned already, is a nutrient that we continue to fall woefully short on. Vitamin D is unique in the nutrient world in that it is the only vitamin made in the human body from exposure to sunlight, specifically from UVB rays—our bodies evolved based on a need for high levels of vitamin D for normal growth and optimal health. There are thousands of vitamin D receptors throughout the body, and vitamin D directly influences hundreds of genes, including those associated with autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, type-1 diabetes, and Crohn’s disease, as well as genes related to cancer, immune function, stress response, and DNA repair. In one study, researchers concluded that, “Our data suggest that any improvement in vitamin D status will significantly affect expression of genes that have a wide variety of biologic functions of more than 160 pathways linked to cancer, autoimmune disorders and cardiovascular disease which have been associated with vitamin D deficiency.” Optimal levels of vitamin D are crucial for immune function, bone and muscle health, brain and cognitive health, blood sugar balance, mitochondrial and cardiovascular health, and more. It really is the nutrient that does it all. Most experts believe that vitamin D levels between 40 and 60 ng/mL will best support whole-body health and many health care practitioners routinely recommend 5,000 IUs of vitamin D3 daily to achieve those levels.

Magnesium Protects Cellu ar DNA from Damage Magnesium is well known for its stress-busting, sleep-promoting, and bone-building properties, and now, new research shows that it’s also crucial for the fundamental health of every cell, down to our DNA. A 2024 study published in the European Journal of Nutrition examined the relationship between magnesium, folate, and vitamin B12 levels, the inflammation marker homocysteine, and DNA damage markers in white blood cells. The study analyzed data from 172 healthy middle-aged adults.

The findings revealed that the people with lower levels of magnesium, folate, and vitamin B12 tended to have higher levels of inflammation, marked by higher levels of homocysteine. When it came to DNA damage markers, magnesium stood out—its levels were significantly correlated with two out of three markers tested (in contrast, folate and vitamin B12 levels showed a significant correlation with only one marker). Notably, the lowest levels of DNA damage markers were found in individuals with the highest magnesium levels and lowest homocysteine levels. The researchers concluded that magnesium is independently and inversely correlated with DNA damage biomarkers, regardless of gender. These findings suggest that high magnesium levels and low homocysteine levels have a protective effect on human DNA. Although magnesium is abundant in plant-based foods such as dark leafy greens, more than 50 percent of people do not consume enough. While prioritizing magnesium-rich foods is ideal, supplements offer a simple and convenient way to increase magnesium intake and support overall health, down to the cellular level.

B ack Seed Oil Reduces Frequency & Severity of Colds in Children

A 2024 study published in the Journal of Functional Foods found that supplementing with black seed oil may be an effective strategy for preventing and treating upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) in children. This is especially relevant given that URTIs (aka, the common cold) are the leading cause of physician visits among children. The study analyzed data from 230 children, aged six to 18, who were admitted to a family medicine clinic in Turkey for URTIs. Participants either supplemented with black seed oil or received no supplementation. Children in the black seed oil group followed standard dosages based on their age and weight: 1.25 ml twice daily for those aged 6-9 years or weighing 20-30 kg, 2.5 ml twice daily for those aged 9-12 years or weighing 30-40 kg, and 5 ml twice daily for those aged 12-18 years or weighing over 40 kg. On average, the children in the black seed oil group supplemented for two to three months, with researchers tracking data over six months. Key measures included URTI symptom severity, the frequency of URTI-related clinic visits, and antibiotic use. The analysis revealed that children who supplemented with black seed oil had significantly lower URTI symptom severity compared to those who did not supplement, particularly at three and six months. Additionally, the black seed oil group experienced significantly fewer clinic admissions for URTIs at the end of the study. This was particularly notable, as most children in the black seed oil group had stopped supplementing by this point, suggesting that the immunomodulatory benefits of black seed oil may persist even after discontinuing use. Furthermore, the black seed oil group required fewer antibiotics while supplementing, indicating that the oil may possess direct antimicrobial properties. Black seed oil is a rich source of thymoquinone, an aromatic compound known for its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and broncho-dilating properties, making it a promising supplement to support healthy immunity and respiratory wellness in both children and adults.

This soup comes together quickly in just one pot on the stovetop, creating a cozy bowl perfect for snuggling up with on a cool night. Melt the butter in a large Instructions

saucepan over medium heat, then add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, 7-8 minutes. 2. Add the potatoes, broth, bay leaf, thyme, salt, and pepper and increase the heat to high to bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook until the potatoes are cooked through, approximately 20 minutes. 3. Remove the bay leaf and stir in the milk, cooking for two minutes. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. 4. Use a potato masher to mash some of the potatoes. For a smoother consistency, use an immersion blender and blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, place the soup in a blender, only filling the blender halfway. Remove the center cap of the lid and cover with a kitchen towel before blending; you may need to do this in batches. 5. Top with optional toppings and serve immediately.
