Welcome to September, which we lovingly call Organic Month around here! If you're reading this, you’re probably on board with organic, or maybe you're organic-curious. Perhaps it's our non-GMO bulk department or Natural Grocers Brand organic Belgian chocolate bars that keep you interested in our brand (we get it—this writer could, in fact, be snacking on one right now). We're sorry we can't share a piece of chocolate at the moment, but we would love to share why we're so committed to supporting certified organic, always. We've been advocates of organic agriculture long before it was officially regulated by the USDA. Our original produce department was 100% organic, even though that little green and white seal wasn't yet a reality. Why? Because producing food without relying on toxic chemicals such as synthetic pesticides and fertilizers makes good health sense to us, and we have a fiery passion for health—for people and the planet. We believe those two concepts are inseparable, so we've supported 100% organic produce ever since our first bunch of spinach was available for purchase by our neighbors. Our current organic system isn't a perfect system, because, in all honesty, what is? It is a work in progress. However, we believe it is the most transparent verification of food quality and agricultural practices we currently have available. It provides traceability and accountability that conventional food production lacks, and certifications are proof to us, and you. We choose organic for many reasons, but here are some foundational ways it benefits your health and the planet. • Soil health is nurtured • Biodiversity is enhanced • Bees and other pollinators are protected • Water is cleaner • Energy use is reduced • Animal welfare standards are higher • Prophylactic use of antibiotics isn’t allowed • Organic systems are more resilient • GMOs are not allowed, making it naturally non-GMO You may have heard many of these reasons before, and that's a good thing, because making better choices for healthier communities and a healthy planet results from repetition. This is why we'll keep reminding ourselves and our neighbors about the benefits of organic agriculture. It's also why we're committed to making it as affordable as possible—because we believe everyone should have access to healthy, organic options. And finally, although this isn't scientifically verified, we think organic chocolate is extra delicious! Thanks for letting us share our passion! We'll see you soon!

MAKES 2 PIZZAS | SERVES 4 PREP TIME: 20 MINUTES BAKING TIME: 10 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 30 MINUTES
• 1 package Natural Grocers ® Brand Hickory Smoked Sugar Free Uncured Bacon (or bacon alternative) • 1 package Natural Grocers Brand Organic Wood Fired Pizza Crusts (or Natural Grocers Brand Gluten Free Pizza Crusts) • 1 (7-ounce) container of Organic Spinach Artichoke Bitchin’ Sauce • ⁄ -cup roughly chopped Natural Grocers Bulk Organic Sun-Dried Tomatoes • ¾-cup Natural Grocers Brand Organic Mozzarella Cheese, shredded (or dairy-free alternative) • 10 jarred marinated artichoke hearts, drained and squeezed in a paper towel to remove excess liquid, and roughly chopped • 1 (10-ounce) package organic frozen spinach, thawed, drained, and squeezed to remove excess liquid Optional toppings to add before baking: Natural Grocers Brand Organic Pepperoncini, Natural Grocers Brand Organic Sliced Kalamata Olives Optional toppings, for serving: Natural Grocers Brand Organic Grated Parmesan, Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Organic Red Chili Flakes
1. Preheat oven to 425°F. 2. Cut the bacon into ⁄ -inch pieces and cook in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally. As the bacon starts to brown, reduce heat to medium-low to prevent the bacon from burning and continue to cook until it is crispy and brown. Use a slotted spoon to transfer to a small bowl and set aside. 3. Evenly distribute the spinach artichoke sauce over the two pizza crusts using a spoon to dollop small amounts over the entire surface area, then smooth over evenly, leaving about ½-inch around the perimeter. 4. Add half the sun-dried tomatoes to each crust, on top of the sauce, and sprinkle each pizza with half of the mozzarella cheese. Divide the chopped artichokes, spinach, and bacon between the two pizzas. Add any other optional toppings. 5. Place the pizzas directly on the oven rack and cook according to package directions, 8–10 minutes. 6. Remove the finished pizzas
from the oven and serve with optional toppings, as desired.

Combining Magnesium with Other Supplements Proves Helpful In PCOS
A recent study published in Frontiers in Endocrinology showed that combining magnesium with other supplements, including vitamin E, zinc, calcium, and vitamin D, significantly improved markers of inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolism in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). In this systematic review, researchers analyzed data from nine randomized controlled trials that included 363 patients with PCOS. While magnesium by itself did not significantly improve levels of inflammation or oxidative stress markers in PCOS patients, when magnesium was co supplemented with these other foundational nutrients, it was found to improve the inflammatory response, insulin resistance, and fat metabolism. The authors further noted that magnesium supplementation may be especially helpful and effective in individuals with deficient magnesium levels. This study highlights the importance of a variety of nutrients in maintaining health and how nutrients work together to provide a synergistic impact on the body. Magnesium, alongside vitamin E, zinc, calcium, and vitamin D are necessary for the cells’ antioxidant systems, energy metabolism, and inflammatory response and achieving optimal levels of these crucial nutrients proves worthwhile for health.
A study published in April 2024 in the journal npj Biofilms and Microbiomes found that just four days of supplementing with a cranberry extract improved the intestinal microbiota of healthy subjects. The study included 39 adults who took a cranberry supplement twice daily (equivalent to 60 grams of fresh cranberries) for four days. Samples of plasma, urine, and stool were collected from the participants at the beginning of the study and at the end of four days. After just four days, researchers found that the cranberry supplements increased Bifidobacterium , which is associated with a reduced risk of diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases, and Akkermansia muciniphila bacterium, which plays an important role in the health of the intestinal mucosa, helping to reduce inflammation and strengthen the intestinal barrier. The supplements had a beneficial effect on all of the subjects, and “…resulted in a significant increase in species richness … and influenced the overall composition and structure of the gut microbiota.” The researchers attributed the beneficial effects to the high content of polyphenols and oligosaccharides found in cranberry extract, which they say act as prebiotics, or in simple terms, food for beneficial bacteria species. Big Food Companies Weaken Antibiotic Standards as Antimicrobial Resistance Remains a Looming Crisis
Is maintaining the status quo of "cheap food" the entry fee to the next pandemic? Panera Bread will save itself a reported $21 million a year by relaxing its food quality standards, including its "No Antibiotics Ever" policy; Chick-fil-A is also revising its five-year-old antibiotics ban to preserve, in part, the future availability of "high-quality chicken" in its supply chain. And Tyson Foods, the meat processor responsible for around one-fifth of the U.S. chicken supply, recently modified its 2017 no-antibiotics in chicken pledge. "Companies … aren't getting a return on their investment if they can't sell it for the extra money it costs to produce antibiotic-free chicken," a University of Tennessee poultry specialist told the Wall Street Journal in 2023.
Antibiotics aren’t used primarily to treat sick animals
In the U.S., sales of medically important antibiotics to livestock producers are almost double the sales of the same drugs for human use, and globally, we rank second only to China for the quantity of antibiotics used in animal food production. An estimated 90+% of these precious medicines are sold as feed and water additives designed for routine administration to large groups of animals for disease prevention, whether they are ill or not. Additionally, no use duration limits are set for roughly 30 percent of these drugs. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working to set new limits, but the agency says this won’t be complete until 2027, at the earliest. In the meantime, we face a dangerous equation in which high numbers of animals being fed antibiotics for an extended time create optimal environments for exposed bacteria to develop and spread resistance. And it's this Achieving real progress in this sector requires altering production systems. A primary use of antibiotics at cattle feedlots, for example, is to prevent liver abscesses triggered by grain-fed diets, which aren't naturally suited to ruminant digestive systems. Meanwhile, in pork operations, overcrowding and poor waste management compel routine use of antibiotics to prevent infections that the living conditions make much more probable. Certified Humane and Certified Organic standards ban antibiotics in production, so farmers rely on management systems that accommodate natural behaviors, provide adequate space, outdoor access, and optimal diets for each species, among other practices, all of which ensure animals stay healthy. The responsibility for antibiotic stewardship is not only on policymakers, farmers, and food sellers. We, as consumers, have a great deal of influence, and the externalized cost of "cheap meat" is a price tag we will all pay in time. Yet, these food industry giants are relaxing their stance on antibiotics at a time when public health experts consider antibiotic resistance an "urgent global public health threat." In 2019, it contributed to almost five million deaths worldwide, directly causing more than one million of them, and the
“potential overuse” of antibiotics in meat production is considered a key driver of antibiotic resistance. Chick-fil-A and Tyson changed their standards from “No Antibiotics Ever” to "No Antibiotics Important to Human Medicine."
But is that good enough? Any long-term use of antibiotics is an opportunity for the evolution of drug-resistant pathogens, with the potential to transfer from animals to humans. Yet, perhaps the most concerning element is that this weakening of standards signals a reversal of progress. Currently, in the U.S., the beef and pork sectors are the highest antibiotic users, while, thanks to consumer demand, chicken is now estimated to be 50-60 percent antibiotic-free. So what future impact will big food companies' relaxation of antibiotic standards have on chicken, or the progress sorely needed in the beef and pork industries? While that remains to be seen, consumers must understand why the routine use of antibiotics in animal agriculture is both reckless and unnecessary.

In recent months, concern has been growing about ack of transparency of a post-harvest fungicide coating by Apeel Sciences that has been approved for use on organic produce, though the full ingredient list has not been made public. Apeel products are being used on both conventional (as Edipeel™) and organic produce (as Organipeel™). Apeel states that their products are “made of purified mono- and diglycerides that have been derived from p ant oils” and adds “Apeel for organic produce contains citric acid.” Produce sprayed with this mysterious coating leaves us with unnecessary exposure to the ingredients themselves (which still haven’t been made clear) and to the byproducts of their processing. Fruits and vegetables are nutritional gems best kept organic. Apeel and Organipeel™ do not meet our high standards, therefore, you will never find produce coated with it at any of our stores.
