“Laughter is the closest distance between two people.” — Victor Borge Dear Neighbors, Happy Women’s History Month! In honor of its sentiments, we want to do what we often do in March—remember the woman whose example first ignited our commitment to nutrition education, community, and family—our co-founder, mother, mother-in law, and grandmother, Margaret Isely. She was a leader whose heart, intelligence, and intuition guided her way, often into unknown territory. From going door-to-door lending out books on nutrition to hours spent sharing her knowledge with customers in the stores to being a leader in the grassroots movement to preserve the right to dietary supplement access, and much more, she acted on the things she believed in. She was even inducted into the Natural Products Industry Hall of Legends in 2015. “She was a fiercely protective mother lioness. If we ended up in her den, we were her family, under her protection,” wrote one Natural Grocers Crew member after her passing. Strong, innovative, compassionate, and wise, she lived the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion every day. She also loved to laugh. And, when Margaret laughed, it filled the space with its resonance—hearty and rich. You couldn’t help but join her. We’d like to sit with that memory for a moment… let the optimism and joy of the woman who co-authored our history wrap us in its warmth. Her legacy still infuses so many details of how we operate as Natural Grocers. Margaret remains a force of nature to the women who have come after her and those lucky enough to have known her. Her nutritional knowledge, unwavering commitment to the values and causes she believed in, and boundless capacity to love still have an impact. So here’s to all the fierce and fearless women (both binary and non-binary) throughout our Natural Grocers family, our neighborhoods, and our world—fighting for equity and justice in quiet ways and loud ones. We hold deep gratitude for you. We are in awe of your bravery, strength, and compassion. Thank you, neighbors, for sharing this moment with us. May we all have a Margaret in our lives. Someone whose presence (or memory) envelops us in its warmth... whose laughter gives us hope.

As we begin to move into the spring months, a lot of people have weight loss on the mind; that well-known burst of motivation for a “new year, new body” we get in January is starting to ramp up again with hints of warmer weather and thoughts of swimsuit season driving it. Regular exercise and healthy eating are closely tied to losing weight, or to reframe it, maintaining a healthy weight, and now is a great time to take that “new body” energy and use it to inspire you to eat in such a way that helps you maintain the weight that’s healthiest for your own body. With that, you can lose counting calories and restrictive diets, and instead, embrace a healthy eating lifestyle—one that is abundant and delicious, and supports the weight that’s right for you and your health—and one that supports healthy blood sugar balance. Healthy weight… what’s blood sugar got to do with it? In short, everything. Keeping blood sugar, or glucose, balanced is so important to health that our bodies have a tightly regulated system of hormones to ensure levels stay within a very narrow range. When you eat sugary foods and simple carbs like bread, pasta, bagels, white rice, potato chips, etc., they are rapidly digested and convert ed into glucose, which leads to sharp spikes in blood sugar. The pancreas responds by releasing a surge of insulin, the hormone that directs the glucose into the cells to either be burned for energy or stored; this removes excess glucose from the bloodstream, bringing blood sugar levels back to a normal range. When sugar and/or refined carbs are occasionally consumed in small amounts, this is an effective system. But when these types of foods are regular ly consumed, the body is constantly struggling to keep blood sugar levels in a normal range by continually pumping more insulin into the bloodstream. When your cells are so full of glucose that they can’t absorb anymore, insulin signals the body to store the excess as fat. This is the problem with eating an excessive amount of carbs—when there is too much glucose in the blood and cells are saturated and can no longer take in glucose (because we can only burn a certain amount of energy at a time), the healthiest thing insulin can do with it is signal the body to store it as fat for future energy use. Chronically elevated insulin is also a potential cause of leptin resistance; leptin, i.e., the “satiety hormone,” tells your brain you are full and to stop eating and regulates how energy is burned. All of this can lead to weight gain. But insulin is not the villain in this story—it is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. A carb-heavy diet that throws blood sugar out of balance is the culprit.

How to achieve healthy blood sugar balance… you are what you eat

Blood sugar and insulin levels are directly related to what you eat, so by shifting away from a diet built on a foundation of refined grains, starchy foods like white potatoes and white rice, sugary sodas and coffee drinks, and breads and sweets, to a lower carb diet built around an abundance of low-starch vegetables, healthy fats, and moderate amounts of quality protein, you can maintain healthy blood sugar and insulin levels. Most of us eat an excessive amount of carbohydrates, more than our bodies need, or can handle, which can cause dramatic spikes in glucose and insulin and lead to fat storage rather than fat burning. To maintain healthy blood sugar, aim to get between 100 and 150 grams of carbs each day (the average American eats between 350 and 600 grams of daily carbs, mostly in the form of refined, processed sugars and grains). If you work to get the majority of your carbs from non-starchy vegetables, a moderate amount from moderate-carb veggies like winter squash, beets, and green peas, and a small amount of higher-carb veggies like potatoes, parsnips, and sweet potatoes, you will easily fall into this range. Add in healthy fats and a moderate amount of quality protein with each meal, and you’re on your way to healthy blood sugar balance—and a healthy weight. It’s also important to note that when you consistently have good blood sugar balance, then you can occasionally indulge in those “not-so-healthy” foods because your body will be better equipped to handle them. Supplements to help maintain healthy blood sugar balance While diet and exercise are vital for maintaining healthy blood sugar, there are also some key supplements that will give you extra support. B-complex vitamins. This family of vitamins is intricately tied to cellular energy production via their role in metabolizing carbohydrates and sugars. When you eat an excess of grain-based carbs and other high carb foods your body quickly burns through the B vitamins to keep up, which can drastically deplete levels. When these important cofactors are missing, blood sugar imbalances can occur. Look for a quality B-complex sup plement—it will provide you with all of the B’s. MCTs. There are several hormones that come into play when it comes to appetite, satiety, and blood sugar balance; one of these is glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). One of GLP-1’s main roles is to stimulate the first phase insulin response, which is essential for preventing the development of type-2 diabetes. It has also been reported to suppress appetite, slow gastric emptying, and promote burning of fat for energy. In studies, MCTs ingested before meals were shown to lower post-prandial (post-meal) blood glucose levels, improve glucose 14 | Health Hotline ®

A healthy diet goes hand-in-hand with regular physical movement for maintaining healthy blood sugar and a healthy weight. Regular movement increases insulin sensitivity and helps the cells effectively use glucose. And it doesn’t have to be strenuous, or long: A study published in 2022 found that walking at a “light inten sity” for as little as two to five minutes throughout the day blunted the rise in glucose and lead to more stable in sulin levels. The researchers looked at the results of seven studies comparing the impact of sitting, standing, and walking on the body’s blood sugar and insulin levels. The best results were found in those who walked for at least five minutes intermittently through out the day, for a total of about 30 minutes. Surprisingly, even taking standing breaks throughout the day had a positive effect on blood sugar, though not as significantly as walking. WALK YOUR WAY TO HEALTHY BLOOD SUGAR BALANCE

metabolism by increasing GLP-1 blood levels, and suppress appetite. Studies have used 10-20 grams of MCTs before meals. When first starting MCT oil, start slowly, working your way up to the full serving. L-glutamine. The amino acid L-glutamine has also been found to increase GLP-1, as well as improve the first phase insulin response. The body releases insulin in two phases after eating—the first phase is a brief spike that lasts about 10 minutes, but is critically important in preventing major glucose spikes; a reduced first phase insulin response is a sign of poor glucose metabolism, phase insulin response, preventing major spikes in blood sugar after eating. In another study, 30 grams of L-glutamine had a positive effect on blood glucose metabolism in “lean, obese, and type-2 diabetic subjects,” in part by increasing GLP-1 levels. Note: From studies, it appears that glutamine taken just before or with a meal isthe most effective way to support the first phaseinsulin response. Alpha-lipoic acid. One of this antioxidant’s important roles in the body is to support insulin function and research has shown that supplementation significantly decreases fasting glucose, insulin, and insulin resistance in a dose-dependent manner, that is, higher doses led to more significant decreases (daily doses ranged from 300 to 1,200 mg). Berberine. Research has shown that the plant extract berber ine lowers post-prandial glucose as well as fasting glucose and insulin levels. It also improves insulin resistance, enhances the production of GLP-1, and stimulates the burning of glucose for energy. It is one of few natural compounds that activates an enzyme in our cells called adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is sometimes referred to as a metabolic “master switch” and regulates how energy is pro duced and used in the body; activation of the enzyme increases glucose uptake and fat burning for energy. Most studies have used between 1,000 and 1,500mg in divided doses daily; the biggest benefits are seen when berberine is taken 15 to 20 minutes before eating. and some believe it’s one of the first steps to developing type-2 diabetes. One study using 25 grams of L-glutamine in type-2 diabetics found that the amino acid restored the first

Curcumin Provides Relief for Musculoskeletal Disorders A 2023 review and meta-analysis found that turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin are effective for a range of musculoskeletal disorders. This research is encouraging, as musculoskeletal disorders, including conditions that limit mobility such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lower back pain, and osteoporosis, are one of the top leading causes of disabilities worldwide. The first line of treatment typically includes pain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are associated with adverse effects after long-term use, including a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders and potential cardiovascular and kidney issues. This new research offers promise for people struggling with these disorders because turmeric and curcumin offer a safe alternative to medicinal pain relievers. The meta-analysis included 20 randomized controlled trials that evaluated the efficacy and safety of turmeric and curcumin. The researchers found turmeric extract and curcumin were effective for musculoskeletal disorders and worked by reducing post-exercise pain, inflammation, oxidative stress, and muscle soreness. Curcumin was also found to be very safe with low incidence of adverse events at doses ranging from 120 mg to 1,500 mg per day. Curcumin is one of the most studied botanical compounds today and has multiple mechanisms of actions, including its ability to affect a wide range of anti inflammatory pathways.

B ack Cohosh & Rhodio a Combination Reduces Menopausal Symptoms

A 2020 study evaluated the effectiveness of a combination of black cohosh and rhodiola, compared to black cohosh alone, to relieve menopausal symptoms. This randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study followed 220 women who had moderate scores on three different validated menopausal symptom scales (the Kupperman Menopausal Index, the Menopausal Relief Scale, and the Utian Quality of life Index). These three indices looked at symptoms like hot flashes, sleep issues, mood, irritability, exhaustion, sexual problems, bladder problems, vaginal dryness, and more. Subjects were divided into four groups: a placebo group, a black cohosh group (13 mg/day), a black cohosh high-dose group (1,000 mg/day), and a combination of black cohosh and rhodiola group (13 mg + 400 mg/day). In addition to baseline measurements, participants were evaluated at six and 12 weeks of treatment. Researchers showed that black cohosh combined with rhodiola was significantly superior to preparations of black cohosh alone in relief of menopausal symptoms, regardless of the dose of black cohosh. In all three evaluations the effects of the supplement combination were significantly greater than for the black cohosh alone, and this only improved over time.

Green Stalks and Grey Skies Of the 42 pesticides commonly used on asparagus, 40 are linked to chronic health problems (such as cancer) in farmworkers; 17 of those 40 are

considered acutely toxic, creating a hazardous environment for farmers and their families; 20 contaminate streams or groundwater; 35 are poisonous to wildlife and 15 are considered toxic to honey bees and other insect pollinators. Furthermore, most of the asparagus available in the U.S. is imported from Central and South America. As part of the import process, asparagus is sprayed with methyl bromide to prevent introducing unwanted insects. Methyl bromide is a highly toxic fumigant that depletes the ozone. For this reason, it has been phased out of most uses except for so-called ‘critical’ uses like pre-shipment. Over the last few years, Peru has been pushing for the U.S. to change its fumigation practices, citing research that shows this highly toxic spray is not only damaging the environment, but also shortens the shelf-life of the asparagus. There is hope that in next few years things could change. One not-so-small step toward change? Always choosing organic—which prohibits the use of synthetic pesticides and methyl bromide—whenever possible and showing the agricultural industry we care about the health of the planet and all the beings who inhabit it.

Cashew Cream of Asparagus Soup Makes: 4 cups | Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes | Total time: 55 minutes

During these still-cool spring days, creamy soup is a wonderful way to enjoy asparagus. This recipe lightens it up a bit by using homemade cashew cream rather than heavy cream. For a deliciously silky-smooth soup, look for thinner stalks of asparagus.

Ingredients • ¾ cup Natural Grocers ® Brand Bulk Cashew Pieces • ½ cup filtered water • 2 tablespoons Natural Grocers Brand Plant-Based Buttery Spread or organic butter • ½ medium organic yellow onion, diced • 2 organic garlic cloves, minced • 4 cups organic vegetable or chicken broth • 1 bunch (~1 ¼ pounds) organic asparagus, woody ends removed and cut into half-inch pieces • 1 teaspoon Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Organic Dill • Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Real Salt and Organic Ground Black Pepper, to taste

Instructions 1. Add the cashews to a small bowl and cover with water (about ¼-inch above the cashews) and set aside to soak. 2. Place a large pot over medium-high heat and add the plant-based butter; when it has melted and starts to foam, add the onion and sauté, stirring every minute or so, until the onion is translucent, 5–6 minutes. 3. Add the garlic to the pot and sauté until fragrant, another 2–3 minutes, stirring regularly. 4. Add the broth and the asparagus and stir to combine, adjusting the heat to a simmer, and simmer for 20 minutes. 5. Five minutes before the simmering is done, drain and rinse the cashews, add them to a blender with half a cup of filtered water and the dill. Blend until smooth and creamy. 6. Add the cashew cream to the soup pot, stir to combine, and let simmer for an additional 10 minutes. Transfer to a blender or use an immersion blender to pulse-blend until you get a smooth consistency. Note: When blending hot liquids, fill the blender less than halfway full, remove the center piece in the blender top, leaving the hole open for steam to escape. Cover the hole with a clean folded dish towel. Start the blender on a low speed to prevent splashing and gradually increase to purée. Once puréed, carefully transfer into another soup pot, repeating until the entire soup is liquified. 7. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve with optional toppings and crusty bread if desired.
